Man Set Up for Robbery in Kennedy Plaza
According to police, on Friday, December 13, officers responded to the Mobile 1 gas station on 269 Valley Street for a report of a robbery.
Upon arrival, police spoke with the victim who said that he was in Kennedy Plaza, when two white women approached him and asked for a ride home, to which the victim agreed.
While dropping the women off, a blue Nissan Rogue bearing RI registration H-88 approached the victim's car.
Two white men exited the vehicle and forcibly removed the victim from his car, stealing his wallet, credit cards and smashing his cell phone. The suspect identified himself to the victim as a police officer and demanded to be driven to an ATM and given money or threatened that the victim would "go to jail."
The victim refused to comply and the second white man searched the victim's vehicle and grabbed his cell phone.
High-Speed Chase & Arrest
Both the female and male suspects fled in RI registration H-88 at a high rate of speed down Putnam Street.
A description of the suspect vehicle was aired, determining that the vehicle was actively stolen. While searching the area, Officer Robert Savage saw the car and immediately activated the emergency sirens on his marked police cruiser.
The suspects refused to yield for police.
Savage, along with K9 Officer Eric Chabot, initiated a pursuit.
According to police, the suspects continued to elude police at a high rate of speed, driving in an erratic manner and failing to comply with numerous traffic laws.
As the pursuit continued into the Hartford Avenue area, Savage saw the vehicle crash into a telephone pole at the corner of Hartford Avenue and Killingly Street near the Providence/Johnston line.
Savage exited his car, drawing his firearm and gave loud verbal commands for the subject to show his hands.
Savage and Chabot proceeded towards the car in an attempt to arrest the suspects and discovered the doors to the car were locked and/or damaged and could not be opened.
Additionally, the vehicle sustained severe damage as a result of the crash. Chabot then saw flames coming out of the front of the car and proceeded to shatter the windows, to get the suspects out.
Chabot identified the driver as Grundy, 34, of Providence, from prior interactions with police.
The additional occupants of the vehicle were identified as Haskin, 29, Dorsey, 37, and Verria, 34, who had an active warrant out of the city of Warwick for shoplifting.
All four subjects sustained injuries and were taken to Rhode Island Hospital via Johnston and Providence Fire Departments.
Police conducted a search of the car and located and seized the items that were reported stolen by the victim. The stolen car was towed from the scene.
The victim responded to the scene and positively identified the suspect's car and his personal belongings, which police returned to him.
