“I think people like her when she’s not worried about cultivating their votes, and they don’t love the persona that she evokes when she is, so my sense is that if she actually entered the race, her standing would change pretty quickly,” said Lawless.

Alternative Impeachment Strategy - That Leadership Didn’t Pursue

Lawless spoke to House Democratic leaders unveiling two articles of impeachment on Tuesday against President Donald Trump — and why she believed that unveiling more articles could have worked in the Democrats favor.

“It makes some sense, right? It allows Democrats in vulnerable districts to not have to cast a really wide net — the narrower the scope, the easier it is for them to defend the vote for impeachment,” said Lawless of the two articles pertaining to abuse of power — and obstruction of Congress.

“The alternative would be to actually have many more articles, to allow them to vote no on some of them and still vote for the ones they believe that their constituents would let them off the hook,” said Lawless. “I think that would have demonstrated at least in a lot of these Trump districts that Democrats hold that they’re not necessarily just doing the party’s bidding.”

“But this was not the strategy the leadership decided not to pursue,” said Lawless.

“I do believe this will be Donald Trump’s Christmas present — maybe the worst Christmas gift a President can get,” said Lawless of the likelihood that the House will vote for impeachment before Christmas, before the Senate takes up the articles in the new year.
