In an exclusive interview with GoLocal, Congressman Joe Kennedy discussed his run for the United States Senate against long-time Massachusetts politician U.S Senator Ed Markey.

The 39-year-old Kennedy has shaken up Massachusetts politics by taking on Markey -- who has served in Congress longer than Kennedy has been alive.

Kennedy outlined how he believes his approach to getting things done is more effective, and spoke to what he said has been his success working on bipartisan legislation -- even during a time when the Senate is controlled by Republicans and President Donald Trump is in the White House.

“If you believe in the urgency of this moment, that there are people that are shut out, left out and locked out from a system that need their concerns to be addressed immediately, then we're going to have to find a way to actually advance those issues immediately.  Today I've been the lead Democrat on over a dozen or so bills since I came into office, some of which I have led and some of which Republican have led, but I was the lead on most of them,” said Kennedy in the interview at Camille’s restaurant on Federal Hill in Providence.

“Almost half we're done under an Obama administration about half we're done under a Trump administration and all of that time, I have needed Republicans, substantial Republican support in order to move my bill through a Republican-dominated House or to get it approved by Mitch McConnell and now Donald Trump. There's a way to do that not necessarily on everything but there's a way to put a marker down about the type of change you believe in," he said.

Kennedy is the cousin to former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy who attended the top-tier Providence fundraiser.  See GoLocal’s interview HERE.

People’s Pledge

One big point of differentiation is Kennedy has signed the “People’s Pledge” while Markey has refused.

The People's Pledge, which was first signed by Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown in their U.S. Senate battle in 2012, is designed to keep from the race "dark" money and personal attack ads funded by groups outside of Massachusetts.

Kennedy is the grandson of former U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the son of former Congressman Joseph Kennedy. He is a graduate of Stanford and Harvard Law School and served in the Peace Corps.
