Lincoln’s Hearthside House Museum is celebrating the holiday season with “An Old Fashioned Christmas.”

“Ever wonder why we hang Christmas stockings, why poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe became symbols of the holiday, or why a pickle ornament is so special among all the others on the tree?  Docents in period attire explain these and other traditions which have become part of our holiday celebrations today,” writes the Hearthside House.

An Old Fashioned Christmas will take place this weekend, December 14 and December 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

An Old Fashioned Christmas

An Old Fashioned Christmas celebrates the traditions and nostalgia with decorations, dozens of elaborately-adorned trees, twinkling lights, festive music, and the aromas of hot cider and home-baked cookies.

Several items from the museum's collections are also displayed as part of the Christmas decor that ranges from Colonial times, to Victorian era, to the 1960s.

Self-guided tours throughout all the rooms, and even the third-floor attic, allow for visitors to spend as much, or as little time, as they wish.

On Saturday, there will be a special appearance by local vocalist Kelley Lennon, who will greet visitors with a variety of holiday songs from her Christmas CD’s between 4-5 p.m. followed by a harpist, and on Sunday afternoon, there will be an appearance of carolers from One Voice, along with an acoustical guitarist and pianist.

On Sunday, Hearthside’s holiday events also extend next door to Chase Farm Park for “A 19th Century Christmas at the Schoolhouse”.

Step inside the restored, one-room Pullen’s Corner School which dates to 1850 to be welcomed by youth docents dressed in period attire and experience a Christmas program as students would have performed during the late 19th century.

The children’s recital of poems and songs will take place at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The schoolhouse may be visited up until 4:00 p.m.
