RI Man Arrested For Alleged Role in January 6 Insurrection by FBI on Wednesday

Special agents and officers with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in Rhode Island arrested William B. Cotton, 53, of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, on Wednesday, pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the United States Court for the District of Columbia. 

He was taken into custody without incident and is charged with the following:  

18 U.S.C. § 1752 (a)(1) – Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds

18 U.S.C. § 1752 (a)(2) – Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds 

40 U.S.C. § 5104 (e)(2)(D) – Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building or Grounds

40 U.S.C. § 5104 (e)(2)(G) – Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building 

Wednesday's arrests bring the total number of individuals charged by the FBI Boston Division in connection with the riots at the U.S. Capitol to eighteen -- Cotton is the third individual from Rhode Island. 

Additionally, the Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs has created a web page where media can track the charging and arrest of defendants in connection with the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Following arrests, or surrender, defendants must appear before district court magistrate/judge where the arrest takes place, in accordance with the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
